When and how did you begin using Computers.

I know, computers have "Always" been around...BUT wait Grasshoppers, when did they appear in the world of men(Women political correctness). Did they spring full blown from the dust of the Earth?
Ok,this thread is kinda a story time thing. When did YOU make first contact with the aliens known as computers?

Hoping we get a few funny stories, and even some with a bit of drama...Remember,I am from the "Before time" when the cybernetic creatures had not yet arrived.

Have fun,and thanks for all the fish....

The first-ever computer I used was when I was 10. I moved schools, and this new school I was going to had - wait for it - a computer room. Brand new, state of the art computers - aka those very first Apple computers with the giant monitors and greenish grey screens. We had class once a week to learn how to type using some silly program with a guy rowing a row boat. The more you typed correctly, the faster the rowboat went. There was also a French fill-in-the-blank style program that we used in conjunction with French grammar class.

    After that, though...

I think I had a class in Grade 7 where we made Yahoo email addresses. I remember thinking it was silly, because why would you use this? Nobody is gonna use this. I'm going to go home and write my friend a letter, telling her about this new email thing that nobody is going to use.

We didn't get our first computer in the house until I was about 14 or so. Maybe 15. I pretty quickly got sucked into MUDs and MSN chat rooms. I could have friends across the globe without writing them a letter? How cool was that?

My first laptop was when I was 20 and I was told in college that handwritten assignments were no longer allowed.

I email all the time. I've sent probably 10 emails this morning for work alone. Who's gonna use this crazy 'email' thing? Not me. Nope.

    Mostly art.

I was in college in 1978, 21 years old when I first set hands on a computer. It was a mainframe with punch cards we had to punch with program code, and an acoustic coupler for the phone to connect from the remote terminals to the mainframe. I think it was an IBM System/370.

Re: When and how did you begin using Computers.

My first computer usage was on a main frame setup in high school. I was in a data processing class and majoring as a programmer at the time. It was an IBM mainframe system and we used punched cards, magnetic drum storage and magnetic tape backups. That would have been 1977.

My first personal home computer was an Atari 800 with the plug in memory. I had messed with an Atari 400 pop top with plug in memory about the same time but that one wasn't mine. I eventually replaced the Atari 800 with a newer model of Atari 800 that didn't use the drop in memory cards. Close to that time frame I also got an old Commodore 64 computer. Spent many hours learning to both program on it and typing in a lot of programs from magazines or books. Even had one of the old 8 1/4 inch floppy drives and though I was he shit when I got a 5 1/4 drive and later a 3.5 inch floppy disk drive. By 1980 / 81 time frame I was looking at getting an Amiga 128 or an Apple II system but both were having issue's so never did.

First computer I used in the Navy was actually a Texas Instruments model with a tape drive. Few actual programs and even less word processing capabilities. Though I was one of the few who still knew how to use card punching machines and read them so got called on occasionally to assist in that.

Things definitely have changed over the years as we went from Commodore's and Atari's to 286, 386, and forward. Sadly many of the programming langues I knew are now as archaic as the systems I learnt them on. COBOL, Neat 3, Ansi COBOL, Fortran, Basic, RPG and a slew of others. Even the coding languages such as EBCDIC are now long in the history bin.

For me it was in high school. I took accounting II. So we had to run our own business on the computer. It was called Max's Jewelry store. Good ol' black screen with tiny green text. When I got my first computer (I was well into my 25s I think) I remember buying pc games to play on my computer. Mist. Yup. I fell in love with that one. Hardcore.

I am gonna ask peeps if they ever had to use DOS. Before the point and click windows world, that was how you interacted with your PC.

My father was in it from the mid 1960's at work. I remember him bringing home templates to draw flow charts with. My first hands-on was around 1980, and it was all DOS then, no mouse, just keyboard. I used to play "Space Invaders" on it. I first used Windows, etc., in '93.

Timex Sinclair, age 10 (1985). Lol. It connected to a black and white TV and you would save your data on a tape recorder. Would spend hours typing code in basic from a magazine only to have it not work. Terrible introduction to computers.
