I think a greater threat is the Financial-Congressional Complex. Corporate influence on policy in general. The defence budget and policy aren't the only ones that've been hijacked. Halliburton, Monsanto, Goldman Sachs, Pfizer and its ilk. All just as much a problem as the defense corporations, if not moreso. For basically the same reason.
The problem gets even worse once you start looking into it, like how people who worked for those corporations can and do take up government positions that regulate them and vice-verse. like Michael R. Taylor, who worked for the FDA... and then a lobbying firm with Monsanto connections, then went back to the FDA, and then Monsanto... and then the FDA again.
I'm sure he was completely objective at all times when he worked for a government agency that is supposed to protect the people against corporations like Monsanto.
