We are getting ready to read Fahrenheit 451, so I got to show these two videos right next to each other, without actually expressing a personal opinion in the classroom:
At the end of the video is a Jewish man explaining why they didn't worry while the Nazis were burning books. Then comes this:
Every moment of a life is a horrible tragedy, a slapstick comedy, dark nihilism, golden illumination, or nothing at all; depending on how we write the story we tell ourselves.

Fahrenheit 451 made me angry when I read it. Not because it was a bad book but because I couldn't wrap my brain around a reason that you would want to give up books. You have no idea how often I compare types of people to the jobs they do. I know most firefighters are not tall with dark hair but I think most of us have very similar personalities. For instance most cooks have an addictive personality, a large percent of us are drug users, alcoholics or like me adrenaline junkies. We like the punishment of going down in flames but LOVE when we kick butt.. A large number of us are also covered in tattoos...hmmm food for thought. I think I need to go back and read it. I do own it after all.
I am so very happy to be back home in Wisconsin.

I don't know if it says in this video, but a lot of the books the Nazis burned were from Dr. Magnus Hershfield's personal library. He was one of the first in the modern world to study sexuality and advocate for gay rights, so you can imagine why his books were burned.
Did not know that, thanks for the knowledge Habbs..

If you teach English in a high school you would suffer terminal depression. Most (based on experience in this rural outback, about 85%) would love to have all books burned in a big fire.
They ain't gottses no use fer dem.

And this is why I don't teach. I am not strong enough to handle that.
