Toxic weed that causes chemical burns and blistering (Warning)

NOt sure this is the best place for this but it seems the most logical looking at headings.

Here's a warning about a toxic plant / weed , Giant Hogweed, that causes chemical burns and blistering with scarring should you get it on your skin. It's an ugly by product and is dangerous to humans and animals, especially your dogs who might simply rub up against it in the grass or such.

Giant hogweed is a menacing plant that can burn, scar and blind you - and now it's spreading across New York. Here's what you need to know

Science works well for this one. That is a distrubing plant.
life itself was a lightsaber in his hands; even in the face of treachery and death and hopes gone cold, he burned like a candle in the darkness. Like a star shining in the black eternity of space.

    Yoda: Dark Rendezvous

"But those men who know anything at all about the Light also know that there is a fierceness to its power, like the bare sword of the law, or the white burning of the sun." Suddenly his voice sounded to Will very strong, and very Welsh. "At the very heart, that is. Other things, like humanity, and mercy, and charity, that most good men hold more precious than all else, they do not come first for the Light. Oh, sometimes they are there; often, indeed. But in the very long run the concern of you people is with the absolute good, ahead of all else..."

John Rowlands, The Grey King by Susan Cooper

"You come from the Lord Adam and the Lady Eve", said Aslan. "And that is both honour enough to erect the head of the poorest beggar, and shame enough to bow the shoulders of the greatest emperor on earth; be content."

Aslan, Prince Caspian by CS Lewis

There was a plant when I was a kid(do not know what it was called) that if you brushed against it,it would cause intense pain(This was in Northern California SF bay area..Might be "stinging nettle)

Those are nasty things. They were originally imported to this country (Finland) as decorative plants but then they started spreading rapidly and taking up space from native plants.
They even look like they're up to no good, at least the huge ones.

The herb rue is another culprit. Especially in strong sunlight when it can cause large blisters.

Speaking of blisters I heard that also pure lime can cause skin problems in sunlight.

Oh yus, this is great. I'll order some for my poison garden immediately. Say, does anyone know what happens if you ingest this, in unknown dosages?

              And their wan hands like snowflakes in the moonlight are gleaming;

The pale guests await thee - mead foams in Valhalla.'"

Yeah, nettles hurt when you touch them, but the pain goes away after a few minutes. You can also get desensitized to them, which is handy if they grow as weeds in your garden and/or you like to eat them. Nettles aren't toxic, though. The hogweed is pretty horrific in comparison.

Hogweed is bad. We have it here, though it's generally removed whenever it's found. It's a tough little (can grow enormous) plant. I sat down in one when I was a kid, trying to pee in the woods... Thankfully my memories of it are pretty faded now.

It will do this to your insides, and probably you will die from it. (actually, from what I understand, the severity of the reaction is because the chemical in question is phototoxic...presumably it wouldn't perhaps be so bad where sunlight can't get...but considering there are confirment ingestion deaths, I'd be wary of testing that)

It is actually illegal to import, export, or transport this plant between states--its designated as a Federal Noxious Weed (its extremely invasive) under the Federal Noxious Weed Act of 1975 which gives the Secretary of Agriculture "the authority to designate plants as noxious weeds by regulation, and the movement of all such weeds in interstate or foreign commerce was prohibited except under permit", "authority to inspect, seize and destroy products, and to quarantine areas, if necessary to prevent the spread of such weeds", and authority "to cooperate with other Federal, State and local agencies, farmers associations and private individuals in measures to control, eradicate, or prevent or retard the spread of such weeds". The (on purpose) growth, sale, etc of these plants are prohibited also by the Plant Protection Act of 2000 and (probably) the Federal Seed Act (maybe from 2004? not totally sure though as I've not ever needed to read this one in its entirety). And most states have further laws on noxious weeds and highly invasive species.

What Thal said... and I can't stress enough how nasty they are. They spread quickly and efficiently and once there you need professionals to get rid of them - if you can at all... no. You do not want this one in your garden. Besides, the ones we have here at least grow best where it's really humid, mostly around ponds and small streams.

I'm really surprised we don't have them here (or if we do, I haven't heard of them). It's really humid here and the area is full of rivers, lakes, and ponds (Berlin is a reclaim swamp). But apparently they're mostly a problem in south and west Germany.
