IRS phone scam - be aware!

I just recieved an automated phone call from a computer voice claiming to be from the IRS, telling me that the IRS is filling a lawsuite against me, and I need to call a phone number IMMEDIATELY.

Since I have problems with the IRS, I had 3 seconds of panic before I did a Google search for "IRS phone call lawsuite." My suspicions were confirmed. It's a scam. I printed out a copy of a website explaining it for my wife because she will fly into a panic if she picks up on a call like this.

Be forewarned! Always check with our friend the internet before calling anybody back...

Phone scams seem to be popular these days.
life itself was a lightsaber in his hands; even in the face of treachery and death and hopes gone cold, he burned like a candle in the darkness. Like a star shining in the black eternity of space.

    Yoda: Dark Rendezvous

"But those men who know anything at all about the Light also know that there is a fierceness to its power, like the bare sword of the law, or the white burning of the sun." Suddenly his voice sounded to Will very strong, and very Welsh. "At the very heart, that is. Other things, like humanity, and mercy, and charity, that most good men hold more precious than all else, they do not come first for the Light. Oh, sometimes they are there; often, indeed. But in the very long run the concern of you people is with the absolute good, ahead of all else..."

John Rowlands, The Grey King by Susan Cooper

"You come from the Lord Adam and the Lady Eve", said Aslan. "And that is both honour enough to erect the head of the poorest beggar, and shame enough to bow the shoulders of the greatest emperor on earth; be content."

Aslan, Prince Caspian by CS Lewis

Yeah, been there, done that. I got an automated call too, so on a lark (bulldookie, I was panicked!) I called back. I got a guy with a thick Indian accent and a name like 'Dave Jones'. He was extremely rude and told me to not talk while he was talking, because I wanted to ask him questions. While he was berating me, I looked up the number and found it is a scam. I told him to shut the eff up for once, that he was a scam artist and to eff off (I can get kind of rough when I'm pissed). I said I was reporting him to the FTC, which I did.

Even if your number is on the federal do-not-call list, it means nothing. The FTC admits on their site that many of these scammers and telemarketers are from outside the US, spoofing US phone numbers. The FTC said that regretfully, there is almost nothing they can do. When I see a number I don't recognize, I just don't answer the phone.

Sometimes just calling back ends up costing you, as if you were calling a phone sex line. It's best to check first before calling back.

That's why it's a good idea to hightail it to your computer, bring up Google and put the phone number in.

I don't answer unknowns, either. Then I google them, and if the number is connected to complaints/scams, etc., I put it in my phone's blocked list.

I don't do unknown numbers unless I'm expecting a specific call from a specific person at a specific time.

                Because people sometimes suck.

This is the first time I've heard of an IRS scam call though.
