I find bacon receives far more praise than it deserves in today's media and overall popular culture. Bacon is just fried pig meat, it is essentially unhealthier ham. It tastes okay, but if its crispy it just tastes like burn, and if its too soft you cant chew it. When its just right, its just fatty pig meat.

I find that when I tell someone I'm vegan, they invariably either tell me why they couldn't be, or why I shouldn't be. Bacon is always foremost in their arguments.
"I just could not live without bacon."
"You just need some bacon in you, then you'll quit veganism."
"You're missing out on bacon."

I really don't understand it. When I was omnivorous, I thought bacon was okay at best, sickening at worst. Chicken was always my favourite meat.

I always assumed the obsession with bacon is that it tastes like human flesh. I know burns victims smell like bacon. My aunt is a vegetarian but still eats bacon now and then. She's also a nurse and it was her who told me that burning human flesh smells like bacon. They do say that medically speaking, pig organs are similar to human organs. So I just assumed that at some point in man's evolution, craving the flesh of his rivals proved advantageous.

When my German ex came over here, he'd never seen bacon rashers like we have before. I don't know what the Germans have instead, but it apparently isn't the same as the stuff you get here. Not that I'm an expert on meat.

I find bacon delicious. Not obsessively delicious, but I prefer it to sausages when ordering breakfast food.

I'm ok with it not being in everything, though. And if I went vegetarian, I would miss steak way, way more.

That's a really morbid theory that I haven't heard before. Wouldn't surprise me if that were the case though, the ferocity with which my brother attacks his bacon butties is pretty shocking.

She's veggie as a lifestyle choice rather than the not wanting to eat flesh thing. She's a freelance 'flying nurse', who's job it is to fly out to British holiday makers who fell sick or were injured overseas and bring them home. So she can be in the air up to 6 times a week. So while she claims the vegetarianism is a health choice, I think she just learnt early on that the vegetarian options on flights and in hotels are often far better than the regular options. She says the only meat she couldn't give up was bacon, and so she still has it.

And me? Morbid? Surely you have me mistaken for someone else! ^^

Woah.. maybe my aunt's theory isn't so off-the-mark after all. Honestly, when you think of it, killing your rivals has its advantages, definitely. During times when food is scarce, it would be a shame to waste those good calories. Once their heads are on spikes, what's a stone-age housewife to do with all that spare flesh??

j/k. It's about HOW you cook the bacon that matters. I don't like overly chewy limp bacon. Or fried till it's crackle either. You got to do it right. In a cast iron pan!

Damn girl,we grew up in the same house..we had a grease can too.
Used for eggs and other stuff,and also to fry baloney...was good on butter(margarine) toast as a sammy.

So, just a fun little tidbit here. Its a little off topic but might be cool for the vegans and vegetarians out there; there is now bacon flavored sea weed. It was developed by Oregon State University and is $90 a pound.
