How do you make a living?

...and is it what you want to be doing?

ETA: If you are a student, etc, what are you studying and what do you want to do?

My current job is administrative assistant. I do filing, data entry, and respond to emails as well as put them in our system, and occasionally billing. As far as jobs go, it's not bad, but not anything I ever considered myself doing as a career. I would like to work full time as a photographer, in various capacities, but that's not what life has in store for me right now. I'd also like to possibly make a little money through crafts and writing, but that's awhiles away.

Not much of anything, really. I was a student for a loooong time, and when I graduated, I took some time out to start a business and write a book. Well, it's been three years and neither has really kicked off. I mean, I did both, but they're not profitable yet. So I'm gonna have to start sniffing around. And since writing and crafting are what I want to do and they're not working at the moment, anything else I take will be contrary to what I want to do.

But hey ho. More money for crafts :-p

I got my war paint on and I'm off to go passive-aggressive all over these socially awkward man-witches. :XD:

I was studying to be a Theoretical Physicist, made it to my BA then went on a helicopter ride and decided to be a pilot. I just passed my flight test for my private license. Until I get a job at an airfield I am currently working in our family business as a horse trainer and riding instructor which I have been doing all my life.

I used to teach high school English for a living, now I just teach high school English.

              Retail.

Considering my Bachelor's is technically in Psychology (although the first 3 years were Biology and Human Physiology focused), I'm really nowhere near where I had hoped to be by this point.

First plan: Marine Biologist specializing in sharks
Second plan: Counselor because I've always been the person people go to in need, might as well get paid for it.

Neither really panned out. Partially because I can't stomach the thought of going into debt for 50 years to pay for a graduate program, partially because I've never really had a stable living situation with which to build a foundation to build that plan on (which is also why my graduated degree is not the same as the first 3 years I began with - that wasn't really by choice either), and partially because all the entry-level jobs that kind of lead into those fields that I ever came across either wanted a grad degree already completed (starting pay $12/hour) or they didn't offer any form of stable hours or medical coverage (both of which I needed to appease immigration's minimum income standards and take care of Mr. Lju's asthma).

Shockingly, my retail position provides those two crucial things and the pay isn't very far off. I just don't get the job I enjoy.

Since those first two plans never really panned out and I lack the resources to pursue them further for the foreseeable future, now I'm aiming for graphic designer and photographer (freelancing). Hopefully one day I'll be able to have my own small business making a small (but liveable) income off my crafts.

Once upon a time I wanted to study sharks too Lju!

So...I work as an industrial hygienist. Basically, I watch people work and hook them up to doodads so I can measure their exposures to stuff that is bad for them.

I want to do wetlands restoration and management though...

Great minds think alike! I find I get most of my fix by drawing them, watching documentaries and checking out shark photography now. It's not quite the same but it's not bad either.

                  I love doodads... ^^

Nothing since I am currently unemployed, the only openings available for me are security guard jobs and it is too late (or early) to inscribe to university.

I suppose nothing now that I am both retired and disabled. I did serve in the Navy as a Cryptologist for nearly 24 years and another 9 years as a transportation router for a local school system. Job wise I really do wish I could work but physically that is not doable anymore.

Wish job would probably have been either something in forestry or archaeology. Education wise I've got a BA in history and sociology and had started a second BS in Geology but never got around to finishing that. The second BS was an alternative to pursuing a Master's in Education as that was not available where I was at, at the time frame. Had considered a job in teaching but kept running into more and more requirements that made it cost ineffective to pursue.

I work for state government. I create, design, document, and implement driver licensing policies, procedures, and projects for the state of California DMV. I also help with customer service issues that have reached the top levels of management and have yet to be solved.

And yes, I LOVE my job! The politics can be crazy, but every day is actually really interesting.

I never knew what I wanted to do for a living. My goals were never big as a kid - I just wanted to be happy. I forgot that for a short time in high school, but remembered it in college, and life has been much better since. I just knew whatever I did should involve at least 3 puppies and a significant other who didn't hate me and planned to stick around for awhile.

Well, I landed the hubby, and have 1 puppy....mostly there!

I'm in management in a tool store. I actually love my job. The commute is down the street on my bike. It's full time with benefits and pto and stuff. The company is growing and is not bogged down by needless crap. I spend the day telling people about tools. In between we talk on our walkies to each other about the customers or what's for lunch. It's fun.

I love that I get to do what I'm good at...paperwork, money stuff and training people. Also I'm the mama hen of the store

Re: How do you make a living?

I'm a vet tech (though we call it 'vet nurse' here) and have been for the past 11 years. 5 of those years I served as nursing manager, but early this year I stepped down from that because it was killing my passion for my job. Being a vet tech is exactly what I want to do and what I'm passionate about, but I burned out at the end of last year after working myself into the ground for people who took me for granted. Now that I don't have to worry about managing a growing mixed animal practice with 4 vets, 6 techs, a kennel hand, 2 reception staff and incompetant upper management anymore, I'm actively enjoying my job again.

I'm about to start my Diploma of Vet Nursing to specialise in General Practice (I already have my Cert IV and Accreditation, and have been published in the Australian Veterinary Nurses Journal twice). My next goal is to quit the practice I'm at and move on to a larger practice with more specialised care. I'd love to work for the referral practice here in Adelaide, which includes both a behaviouralist AND an exotics specialist... those are my two biggest passions... exotics and behaviour. That would be my dream job, plus I could then also do the Surgical and the Emergency Crit Care Diplomas, which I can't do in general practice.
