    Pattern for a Poppet

    Hi everyone,

Again, I hope I have put this in the right forum. Forgive me if I haven't. I plan to make a poppet for Samhain this year. I have never made a poppet before, (I'm sewing one) and I was wondering if anyone has a pattern or should I make a pattern myself? I would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

    Re: Pattern for a Poppet

I know there are a lot of cookie cutter poppet patterns on the net now. Many look like a ginger bread man near as I recall now in how they are laid out. So in that regard are fairly easy to create and really do not require a whole lot of though or material for the creation. Just a very basic construct.

Personally though I'd say a poppet needs to be created by the practitioner with a purpose in mind. Then the purpose drives the structure and materials that will be utilized.

Consider that Halloween is a celebration of the dead basically and the end of the growing season. So you could celebrate that with something like a corn dolly that holds the fertility elements and will be held to represent the last harvest. Some areas that still grow wheat, corn or other crops still make a corn dolly from the final harvest before the fields are left to winter and the land wights. Some people make the fruit headed poppets where you use the wrinkled and dried out fruit to make the thing. Personally I wonder at times if the idea of the pumpkin didn't come from the poppet. Yeah I know people will point me to the historical usage of turnips I think it was that were original used.

I've seen some really neat looking poppets formed from corn husks and the wrappings and corn silk used to make a poppet. The husk making the body, the wrappings making cloths and such and the silk used to make hair, make weaved belts, braids, etc as well. Never could get the grasp of making them myself but cattails work pretty good, especially if they are partially exploded and have the white core in contrast to the darker brown husk.

Of course if your going for the voudun type doll then that is a different creation though it still is a poppet. There you need something from your target such as hair, finger nail clippings, blood, skin, etc. Then it is weaved into the dolls creation to become the person, an extension of them as it where.

I know there are threads here about poppets and construction but my search skills are not working to great today.
