Definition - A Monument erected to depict or celerbrate a person or organization that was erected with appropriate permissions at the time of erection has survived more than 50 years without being taken down by appropriate authorities.
My view on this is simple. Someone thought it was important enough top place a monument there and often did so at great expense. They are therefore a part of our historical heritage and must be left in place to preserve the history they represent. Removing them, whether they represent the best of humanity or the worst is simple vandalisim at best, legal or not. Denying the worst in history simply guarantees that it will happen again.
However as a compromise I have no objection to a plaque or such being added explaining the nature of the person and/or their deeds from as close to a factual and neutral perspective as possible.
