It would be so much better if people (citizens) actually understood how the gooberment works so they wouldn't be fooled by candidates who claim that "president" has the same powers as "dictator."
Too much to ask? Yes - when about 1/2 of the population is of below average intelligence, and 1/2 of the rest don't know nuffin', and don't even know they know nuffin'.
Every moment of a life is a horrible tragedy, a slapstick comedy, dark nihilism, golden illumination, or nothing at all; depending on how we write the story we tell ourselves.
It does depend on what it means to "have what it takes." George Washington was probably the only person to serve as president that had what it takes. I think what it really takes is humility and the desire to SERVE the people of the country not the desire to force feed the country what one thinks they aught to have. Arrogance runs strong in every politician because they think they know what is best for their country.

I think the biggest problem is not that people are below average intelligence, although that may be true, but it is apathy. Not enough people will take the time to learn about the government. They just take it face value that this is how it is supposed to be. Then there are those too, who read the constitution and pick parts and pieces out to "validate" their position. Much like so many religious people and their scriptures.
