Tattoo safety:Man dies after swimming with new tattoo

Man dies after swimming with new tattoo

    Story here.

As tattoo artists will tell you, there are some critically important rules to follow in the hours and days after getting inked. Most important: keeping your new body art clean and covered while the skin has a heightened susceptibility to bacterial infection.

The man got an infection that turned into a flesh eating infection

As bad as a guy I served with. Got a vasectomy then went swimming in one of the man-made lakes on base at Groton. Not a lot of natural flow into the lake so it got pretty bad during the dry season. He didn't die but it sure got infected and leaked all sorts of crud. He washed all the time but for a bit you could smell it on him even with all the medicine and such. Being we were all not just Sailors but Submariners and Spooks with that mental outlook we gave him no pity.

Re: Tattoo safety:Man dies after swimming with new tattoo

A coworker of mine got her first tattoo with me. We took her to get a ring of red stars around her ankle. Later the next day she went out and decided to wear fishnet stockings with her ankle strapped platform pumps.

Needless to say, her first layer of ink rubbed off, thus not allowing a good 'crust' to form (this 'bakes' the ink underneath). She was really pissed.

Mr Penry was told to apply pile ointment on his new tattoo. Worked really well and after all these years it's still as fresh as a daisy!

I still plan to get a tattoo. However, I will follow the rules to the 'T.' My sister and her husband both have tattoos and I can ask them for advice. The shop I went to to get my daiths also have really good tattoo artists, so I'm optimistic that having a tattoo is really going to be no big.

This won't stop me from getting more tattoos. But I also know that a fresh tattoo is basically a wound to the skin. It needs to heal first before resuming some normal activities, such as swimming, extreme sports, prolonged exposure to sun or tanning beds, etc.
