I saw that. A cultural tragedy - it was built over 900 years ago, one of the great works of mankind.

From what I've read a lot of it's been saved actually. A big part of what's burned is 19th century. And a lot of the artefacts and statues were removed for renovation.

That's not being reported over here. I hope it's true.

Me too. I guess time will tell. But I'm watching a live feed here, it looks contained.

I have a hunch this will boil down to some idiot smoking a cigarette where they weren't supposed to. Renovation doesn't cause a fire all by itself. In any case, it's awful and heartbreaking. "Nothing lasts forever but the wind and sky".

Can you hear me, Major Tom? I think I love you.

I'm talking to a friend who was there just this afternoon and says it's unusually hot, so that might be a factor.
And our news are reporting the bell towers are thought to be safe now. that's something at least.

Fires in renovations are more likely to be caused by welders, cutting torches, cutting wheels, etc, things that can throw sparks and hot metal slag.

Yep. And if it was unusually hot, it was possibly also very dry, making it easier to catch fire and burn faster, hotter and stronger.

I'm curious to hear what they report once the investigation is done.
