My nephew keeps tarantulas as pets. I couldn't do that. He has said that as soon as one of them bites him it is over. I think that they are beautiful. My parents have tons of tarantula nests on their property, and it doesn't bother me at all- they are fascinating. But tending to one in a cage would be too much for me.

Move to Australia... you can get all kinds of stick and leaf insects at the reptile and insect shows and also a lot of pet shops. They are popular as pets and petting zoo critters, and as classroom pets at schools and museums. Most people know of the stick insects (and they live wild in even non-tropical areas), but we have lots of different leaf insects too. Does the US not have native leaf insects and stick insects? I never really thought of these as a uniquely Australasian thing.

Awww c'mon... that's a myth! Ironically, bugs that lay eggs/larvae under the skin is something we DON'T have much of. Unlike places with cuterebra... *shudders*.
A few inches? Awwww little ones, I bet they are cute! Our stick insects are BIG. I used to have a photo of one we found on our front door but I can't find it today. That sucker was bigger than my hand! Nothing cuter than a tank of itty bitty babies though.
They do sell mantis here, and they are amazing, but I don't want to raise flies to feed a pet bug, so I'm going vegetarian bugs...

I'm not particularly fond of spiders and used to be deathly afraid of them, but if I was going to have a pet bug it would probably be a tarantula. For some reason they've never really fit in the spider category in my brain. I think the stick and leaf bugs are cool too... but the tarantula might actually be able to stand up to the cats...
