    Natural food? Good for ya?

The idea of "natural" (food, living, acting) is one of those things that is always in the air.

The problem, though, is that, despite the subjective belief that "natural" has a meaning, the word is, essentially, void of meaning.

The truth is that what natural means, and whether natural is good for a person, is highly complex. Consider this article:

    What are natural foods?

That is why even natural carb sources such as potatoes (also honey and maple syrup) may be less healthy for most people today than ‘artificial’ nearly-zero-calorie sweeteners in diet sodas, such as aspartame or saccharin. Aspartame and saccharin are human-created chemicals that artificially replace real carbs, which are calorie-rich. (Regarding the worry that artificial sweeteners put you at risk of cancer, the chances are actually vanishingly small. Your risk of disease from carb overload from foods such as sugared sodas, on the other hand, is astonishingly high, whether the carbs are natural, like honey, or unnatural, like table sugar.) So given our unnaturally high levels of calories, and given our unnaturally low levels of exercise, you may well minimise risks to your health by choosing artificial diet soda rather than naturally honey-sweetened soda because the diet soda doesn’t add still more calories to your diet. Too many calories is a major cause of death today: many people you know will die of diabetes or heart trouble, leading causes of which include our unnaturally calorie-rich diets.
Every moment of a life is a horrible tragedy, a slapstick comedy, dark nihilism, golden illumination, or nothing at all; depending on how we write the story we tell ourselves.

I always think its funny that our concept of "natural" is oh-so-very rooted in the theological (Christian) meaning of the word...

Anything that exists as a result of natural processes or the function of biological organisms is, in all technicality, "natural," though in practice we put a very JPS definition* on it.

“You have never answered but you did not need to. If I stand at the ocean I can hear you with your thousand voices. Sometimes you shout, hilarious laughter that taunts all questions. Other nights you are silent as death, a mirror in which the stars show themselves. Then I think you want to tell me something, but you never do. Of course I know I have written letters to no-one. But what if I find a trident tomorrow?" ~~Letters to Poseidon, Cees Nooteboom

“We still carry this primal relationship to the Earth within our consciousness, even if we have long forgotten it. It is a primal recognition of the wonder, beauty, and divine nature of the Earth. It is a felt reverence for all that exists. Once we bring this foundational quality into our consciousness, we will be able to respond to our present man-made crisis from a place of balance, in which our actions will be grounded in an attitude of respect for all of life. This is the nature of real sustainability.”
    ~~Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee

"We are the offspring of history, and must establish our own paths in this most diverse and interesting of conceivable universes--one indifferent to our suffering, and therefore offering us maximal freedom to thrive, or to fail, in our own chosen way."
~~Stephen Jay Gould, Wonderful Life: The Burgess Shale and the Nature of History

"Humans are not rational creatures. Now, logic and rationality are very helpful tools, but there’s also a place for embracing our subjectivity and thinking symbolically. Sometimes what our so-called higher thinking can’t or won’t see, our older, more primitive intuition will." John Beckett

Natural is void of meaning for me as well. Nature is all and all is nature. It's like a synonym of "possible" for me.

I've always liked the term "natural flavor." Can you just go pick some flavor?

    Chicken. Everything tastes like chicken.

Except turkey. Turkey tastes like flamingo.

there is a lot of garbage food out there right now. im on a fixed income and it kinda sucks because that shitty food tends to be way more affordable. But i feel so much better when i eat healty and natural..all those man made chemicals and genetically modified ingredients..it pisses me off too because good food shouldnt be a luxury imho. i plan on starting a garden next year and i already supliment my diet with things i forage from the forest like mushrooms and berries and I hunt and fish a lot (wild game meat is waaay healthier then that lame ass factory farm meat thats all pumped with hormones and you can tell a difference in the tast and texture of meat from an animal that actually gets excercise--guess what? its dramatically better).

It all depends on what you eat. I believe in moderation. Too much of something isn't good. You have to balance what you eat. It's all about moderation.
