Is Jedi Really A Real Religion?

I have an interesting question: Is Jedi really a real religion? Because I happen to be a Star Wars fan and I want to can a fictional religion (like the Jedi) be a real religion?

Don't know if there still are but there used to be "Practitioners" of it years ago. It had a well defined theology and structure at the time. All laid out according to the information derived from the cannon of the books and movies. Granted that didn't mean it was an officially recognized religion from a governmental aspect though. But then again neither was Paganism or most of the groups that fell under that umbrella term at the time.

The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant compared to the power of the Force.

You can still find Jedi practitioners floating around. I came across some Jedi forums a few years ago. Somewhere around here, Corbin has a brief thread referencing a news article about one of the more prominent Jedi practitioners.

"It is not simply enough to know the light…a Jedi must feel the tension between the two sides of the Force…in himself and in the universe."
    ―Thon

"When to the Force you truly give yourself, all you do expresses the truth of who you are,"

    Yoda

Yoda told stories, and ate, and cried, and laughed: and the Padawans saw that life itself was a lightsaber in his hands; even in the face of treachery and death and hopes gone cold, he burned like a candle in the darkness. Like a star shining in the black eternity of space.

    Yoda: Dark Rendezvous

"But those men who know anything at all about the Light also know that there is a fierceness to its power, like the bare sword of the law, or the white burning of the sun." Suddenly his voice sounded to Will very strong, and very Welsh. "At the very heart, that is. Other things, like humanity, and mercy, and charity, that most good men hold more precious than all else, they do not come first for the Light. Oh, sometimes they are there; often, indeed. But in the very long run the concern of you people is with the absolute good, ahead of all else..."

John Rowlands, The Grey King by Susan Cooper

"You come from the Lord Adam and the Lady Eve", said Aslan. "And that is both honour enough to erect the head of the poorest beggar, and shame enough to bow the shoulders of the greatest emperor on earth; be content."

Aslan, Prince Caspian by CS Lewis

If we use a sociological definition of religion, for example Durkheims functional description-

A religion is a unified system of beliefs and practices relative to sacred things, that is to say, things set apart and forbidden – beliefs and practices which unite into one single moral community called a Church, all those who adhere to them.
Then, yes, it can be, and notice that there is no requirement that any of the stories be true. Go get your Jedi on Bart!

If, otoh, by "real" you're wondering whether you'll ever be able to tk an xwing out of a bog...smart money says no, but get back to us after you've spent a few years (or days..I guess?) learning to master the force.

Australians, remember when 70 000 of us listed 'jedi' as our religion to stick it to the ABS?
