I would call it a belief in spirits, energies, higher beings, or other supernatural forces and the cultural rituals (here used in the anthropological sense of the word) that go along with it.

An organized system of belief that generally seeks to find purpose, meaning, goals, and methods of communicating and co-existing with the Universe, involving well-defined practices and rules followed by more than one individual.

I think its the beliefs and practices centered around the manifestation of divinity (in whatever form), or analogous idea of similar importance.

                  Re: What's a religion?

Putting aside what the word 'religion' implies according to the English language, I think religion means a way of life. Which is why I prefer the Arabic word deen.

In that sense you can include Atheism for example in that definition.

Religion to me is the type of thinking you use to decipher phenomenons and the workings of the world (This way you could include Atheism as well)

For some people it's just another stick to beat the dog with. (Do you have that saying in the US?)

No...we don't beat dogs. Instead we beat dead horses...

Ah, that's different. Beating a dead horse here is keeping on with something that obviously isn't going to work. A stick to beat the dog with means an excuse to throw your weight around and bully people. Thanks for the explanation Rok!

It wasn't a very good one, apparently - I guess I misunderstood the meaning of the dog thing. Beating a dead horse means the same over here.

I would say that religion is the belief in and worship of something bigger than you are, whether that be a god, a pantheon of gods, or even just a concept.
