    linguistics question

oaky, so I was reading yesterday. can someone explain why we call Othin - Odin but we call Thor - Thor and not Dor? it's been bugging me all day.

eththorn character. Thorn was replaced in English by the letter "y" (so in reality, "ye old barn" would actually be pronounced as "the old barn", but I digress) and then with the two letters "th". Eth is pretty much always anglicized as a "d," presumably because of its resemblance to that letter.

As far as pronunciation goes, the two sounds are quite different. It's the same placement of the tongue in your mouth, but thorn is unvoiced (as in "thermos") while eth is voiced, as in "the" or "that".

of a spear on the way without.
