Re: What do you hate about where you live?

      God... Georgia... lets see.

I'm not originally from here. I was raised in southern middle Tennnesse. And before I moved here, I thought the same thing that all of you are most likely thinking. They're both southern States, people say yall and drink sweet tea, right? Not so much.

The people of my area are very conservative. Most are fundamentalists, low educated, and quite happy to just be very simple people. But, they're also rather live and let live types. As long as you don't bother them, they wont bother you.

Oh, not the rednecks in Georgia. There are neo-Confederates and militia groups down here everywhere. We just had a group of four guys in their 70s get arrested by the feds because they were planning on making ricin and dumping in some federal buildings in Atlanta. They're from White County. That's the county directly north of my county.

I hate that I live in Jesus land. Not that I have a problem with Jesus but I daresay their Jesus isn't quite the same as mine. Everyone here is Republican and conservative. They're pro-life, anti-sex education, small gubmint, the South will rise again! types who think "niggers" and "spics" and "queers" are the cause of all their woes. And as much as they will tell you they're not racist.... they are, and everyone knows it.

They keep electing conservative businessmen who will rip them off and make shady land deals which causes a hive public outcry.... and then vote them right back in again. For a wonderfully developing story, see the Gwinnett County section of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution for their newest councilwoman to get busted with accepting bribes for votes and the follow-up article with Sheriff Conway that says the corruption probe could go back as far as 2004. Keep in mind, they've already busted three councilpersons already.

Oh, and taxes. GOD ALMIGHTY they hate taxes down here... you even dare suggest a tax increase and they'll be scaling for your ouster next election.

Bit the thing that I hats the worst? These people LOVE to not be educated. They don't read or watch the news. They get all of their information from hearsay and right-wing talk radio (the media has a liberal bias, if you didn't already know). You tell them you're a Democrat or pro-choice or pro-gay and you'll likely be called a socialist or a communist. I had a lovely conversation with one of my former deputies on facebook where he immediately stacked my faith, my patriotism, my support of the military, and me being a liberal.... simply because I asked for a source for his information.

I'm stuck here for a while. My wife's family is from here and her children's dad lives here. I'm not gonna be the cruel step father who separates little girls from their dad... so here I'll be for the next 15 years.

There once was a man who said though,
It seems that I know that I know,
      What I'd like to see,
Is the I that knows me,
When I know that I know that I know.

It is, but you also get paid higher to make up for it. Still, getting there is tough, and they're not so easy on the visas. It's not for everyone though...it's just that ConnollyCat was complaining about racism, sexism, homophobia and stuff, and while those do exist everywhere, I found Vancouver has pretty low doses of it, and it's more laid back and liberal. It has its downsides (it's why I don't live there!) but it's definitely great in some ways, and moving here was a culture shock because of how people are on the West Coast of Canada (I actually laughed at someone the first time I was told that Berlin was multicultural!)

Actually I like where I live. A lot. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else other than South Wales. It's quirky, eccentric, has problems, poverty, poor health and yet.... I love it here. With regard to religion - mostly non-comformist Christians. Some huge white crosses have been painted up on the mountains overlooking the valley towns, but then you get stories such as this :

which I blogged about some years ago here:

and you realise that really, we're all a bit bonkers....

Re: What do you hate about where you live?

Moving from the northeast to the southeast has been like relocating to a different country for me in a lot of ways. I'd have to say that the biggest downsides have to do with rural policies I am entirely unfamiliar with along with social behavior which I am not accustomed to. For instance, I lie in an area where it's legal to own and shoot a gun. That firearms have always been described to me as being "practically illegal" in New Jereey honestly ticked me off while I lived there; it seems disproportionately strict about gun laws in a way that appeared useless to me. But now that I have trailer park neighbors who a) own guns b) shoot them in the stupidest fashion possible and c) shoot at "feral" cats without bothering to differentiate between "feral" and "indoor-outdoor pet," I've realized that I reaped the luxuries of severe gun control policies, like not hearing random gunshots near my house at all hours and worrying about my cats and dogs getting shot by a drunken lunatic. You know.

BUT WAIT! Why does he shoot cats? Because they make his dogs bark. His hunting dogs, who I've never seen out of their outdoor crates. Ever. And by hunting dogs, I mean several loving beagles who are dopplegangers for my window-breeze-cruising, couch potato, cuddly puppy, who by the way is an excellent mouser and rabbiter without the crock-pot "benefits" of sensory deprivation (apparently, hunting dogs are traditionally locked in crates to prevent over stimulation in their noses?). So, you know, I've been living there for half a year and have never seen the hunting dogs go hunting. But they bark at cats going by, because, you know, they're effing bored and get no attention. The simple solution? Shoot neighborhood cats. Great.

But the best part? This is all totally, completely legal. One of my (nice, non-pet-killing) neighbors recently told me that one of the hounds got out at night. I swear on all that is holy if I ever see them out of that crate, I'm going after it and taking it to a damn shelter. I mean, really, what the hell? These people aren't starving. They don't hunt for a living. But hey, unless I see them starving, I can't do a damn thing.

On the other hand, those who do love their dogs here really

There are definitely more things I love about Las Vegas, and Nevada, than things I hate. My husband and I are trying to get out of Las Vegas proper - and that's one of the coolest things. You go about 1/2 hour in any direction and you're out of town & into the desert wildlands. Of course, if you go about an hour in any direction, you're back in a different type of civilization: Creepytown, USA. The Hills Have Eyes sort of towns. :O

I truly love Michigan. We are blessed to get to experience all four seasons (sometimes in one day). We have beaches, mountains, sand dunes, forests, waterfalls, cities, farms... you name it and its probably here. But with the economy falling everyone here seems to suffer. You drive down a city block and 50% of them are foreclosed or in the process. School systems are a joke. Kids around here are more apt to chose a life of selling drugs then going to high school. In Flint (inner city) there is a 60% fail rate in high school. Only 40% of their students graduate... Welfare seems like a picnic compared to working full time minimum wage.

I hear about my grandma talk about the 1940s-60s and it just breaks my heart... what happened to my home?

I want to say cholos. But they don't actually bother me. What DOES bother me? Is that when driving to work via the streets, I have to go through my hometown small city. And it only seems to have one main street going over the bridge to the other cities. Which causes horrible gridlock! If/when that street is closed down, it's impossible to get out of the city. I hate that everything shuts down like at 10pm too.

In the southwestern US, we have a lot of 'Spanglish', which is a mix of Spanish & English. In Pennsylvania, there's a lot of Dutch, New York has Yiddish & Italian... American language is eclectic, to say the least. We steal a little bit from everyone

Not to mention add our own syllables when we don't have a dialect or just don't find mixing languages enough. Ask AzazelEblis about how I say "Tibetan" or "mischievous".

You must not live near Detroit then. There isn't any amount of money that could get me to move back to Michigan. :/

I might as well post something related to this thread.

Something I really hate about where I live, and I'm sure there are lots of places everywhere that have his problem...but I don't live there, so I will apply this strictly to Portland, in my case. I cannot stand the large concentration of hipsters in this place. Especially the ones that live in downtown Portland. Because the majority of them are rich little snobs that live in posh overpriced apartments or condos and they don't even bother to slow down before crossing the street. Most of the time they are jaywalking. Wtf.

I have nothing against people riding their bicycles. What I do have a problem with are the assholes that are on bikes that don't use the bike lane, dont stop for red lights, think they own the road, zip right past you when you least expect and then get pissy at you when you almost hit them because they came out of nowhere. Jerks.

Also I wish we had more thunderstorms here. We typically get one about one a year to 18 months ish. Sad panda.
