    Just a quick question

Do witches here and other related folk keep materials collected and ready to go?
Meaning, I'm wondering if you guys always have various herbs and stones and candles on hand or if you get ahold of them as needed.
I personally just keep basic things like sea salt, salt water and white tea candles around in case and pick up random things that might be useful as I go about my day (I rescued four perfect looking pine cones from a lawnmower the other day and am keeping those around, they seem like they might be handy) but if there's a specific spell I really feel the need to undertake, usually a big last resort-type spell, I make a list and go to the local organic foods co-op and pick up whatever herbs I feel are necessary. They seriously have everything there, and it's very inexpensive, it's a great resource for things I never even thought I could find in a grocery store.
Then again I'm a bit of a minimalist and like to work spells based on chants and so on and am usually content to just get things done with my hands and voice and the minimal ingredients I mentioned above.
So basically I'm just wondering if folks keep like... a stash of herbs and crystals or something, how/where you gather your supplies and so on.

I primarily work with my Mesa (medicine bundle). It's got everything I spiritually need already right there. If I need outside tools or *condiments* (Because to me that's what they are. Extra pazazz to make the main dish have a specific flavor.) I usually keep them handy on one of the kitchen shelves or in my travel bag for my Mesa. I don't use many tools. Stones and crystals mostly.

All the tools I need are part of me. Past that, I've got some amulets that are convenient to have and can turn my surroundings into tools easily enough.
life itself was a lightsaber in his hands; even in the face of treachery and death and hopes gone cold, he burned like a candle in the darkness. Like a star shining in the black eternity of space.

      Yoda: Dark Rendezvous

"But those men who know anything at all about the Light also know that there is a fierceness to its power, like the bare sword of the law, or the white burning of the sun." Suddenly his voice sounded to Will very strong, and very Welsh. "At the very heart, that is. Other things, like humanity, and mercy, and charity, that most good men hold more precious than all else, they do not come first for the Light. Oh, sometimes they are there; often, indeed. But in the very long run the concern of you people is with the absolute good, ahead of all else..."

John Rowlands, The Grey King by Susan Cooper

"You come from the Lord Adam and the Lady Eve", said Aslan. "And that is both honour enough to erect the head of the poorest beggar, and shame enough to bow the shoulders of the greatest emperor on earth; be content."

I have a lot of stuff on hand, but not many items that are solely for ritual or spellwork. Like, I cook and bake a lot, so I have a lot of spices, herbs, oils, and other food items (like cornmeal and honey). I also do a lot of various arts and crafts, so I have tons of thread, embroidery floss, scrap cloth, paint, ink, beads, bottles, essential oils, beeswax... The only consumables I keep around solely for spell work would be a few special candles, a few incense blends (and charcoal disks), some ointments, and some smudge bundles. Oh, and a few herbs that are only used in ritual, like mugwort, wormwood, and tobacco. Everything else would be the reusable sorts of ritual items, knife, rattle, cup, charms, and so on.

Despite having tons of items on hand, I do prefer to go out and forage for the herbs, wood, dirt, stones, or whatever else that I can get from outside. Keeps me in contact with the land, adds an extra level of effort to a working, and also because it's just enjoyable to be out there.

I keep a few things on hand and usually find a way to involve them in whatever I'm doing. But mostly I do my magic 'on the breath' so to speak, using just my will and my breath and I find it works very well for me. There is nothing wrong with going out last minute to gather or buy what you want, the effort you put into that is part of the spell anyway, as far as I'm concerned.

Some spells (particularly old ones) have very specific instructions for collecting the ingredients and again I believe this was to build up the effort we put in, focusing our intention on what we're doing (although I don't normally go for spells like that myself).

Pretty much what Gardenia has said...

Most of my witchy work stuff overlaps with my herbal, my kitchen, my craft cabinet and my natural history habit.
