Whether a crisis or a slope, the economic future of America is once again in the hands of the very people who helped destroy it, and only the American people can break the cycle.

The way I described this to my husband: A bunch of politicians pouring water onto their own heads while becoming hysterical about how heavily it is raining.

Here's how it's gonna go: We'll "run off that cliff", and then something will get done.

      Why?

Because then, Republicans don't have to violate their taboo against actively raising taxes. Instead, Obama can almost write his own tax plan after that, so long as it involves less taxation than under the Clinton years. And if Republicans don't pass it, they'll be cast as absolute obstructionists by even a small camp at Fox News - Fox Business will likely be the epicenter of that camp.

That is, if Obama finds a spine and drops his testicles.

Regardless, it is not going to be enough. We've got too many new, expensive agencies and programs - plenty of which are Republicans' pet projects. And then there's the Social safety net, which is going to take a hit, in spite of Democrats' protests.

Once we go off that "cliff", repairing the damage done to social programs is going to take the cooperation of the "Fiscally Conservative" GOP controlled House. Fat chance of getting it past them.

And lemme tell ya, the Teabaggers are sooo pissed with John Boehner for negotiating that they party is pushing folks like Bob Goodlatte (of SOPA fame!) to try and unseat him as speaker of the house. You know, because Boehner realized that they can't just dictate terms to the president and senate, and expect that to fly. I've pitied Boehner for a while, for having to compromise both with a Centrist White House, and an Extremist Tea Party - he has been set up for failure, yet again.

But why did nearly 2/3 of the house of Reps go to Republicans, while more than half of the popular vote went to Obama? For one, there is the appeal of centrism. On the other hand, there is terrible Gerrymandering, and we've got plenty of that going on among Republican-controlled state legislatures.

You wanna fix your broken country? Swarm your state leglislatures with non-conservatives, and keep it up until well past the next Census. Invade conservative districts, take them over with new ideas. Or better yet, with old ideas from Jefferson, and his input that begat the American Left.

the only way to fix our country is to stop spending so much on stuff we cant afford, stop the ponzy schemes of our social welfare programs, social security etc, and stop policing the world. we all need to be mature, and realize the truth of the matter, and people like azazel show how immature out country is. we can not call each other names, point fingers, complain and sit here like children. we need to work together, stop the spending of our government, and take control of our federal reserve bank or just destroy it as it just screw us. if not, we will go into hyperinflation, lose our freedoms, and become controlled even more by the UN and the elites. take the government out of lives and we will be fine.

"Stop spending [on] so much stuff we can't afford" like those two wars that Republicans put on the Credit Card while simultaneously cutting taxes? Since when were tax cuts fiscally responsible? http://finance.yahoo.com/news/tax-cu...151649273.html They don't spur growth.

Social Welfare programs as ponzi schemes? Hardly. We seem to think that the right to life in this country is Sacred - so are you prepared to let your countrymen die of starvation when they lose their jobs? How sacred is life to you?

What does spur growth is investment. When the private sector lacks the stomach for it, there is no one left but the government. Private sector investment has long neglected what people need to actually participate in the economy - you know, to grow the GDP and whatnot.

And I thought this juxtaposition was rich:

As for the Fed - how well do you understand what that is? Where do you think our currency is going to come from, if not from the Fed, or another bank like them (state owned, or otherwise)?

"Hyperinflation" - the stated goal of the Fed is to curb inflation. Considering how inflation dilutes the returns on loans, and the Banks which loan money to us literally own the Fed, they're not going to slit their own throats like that. A large part of Economics is understanding game theory and incentives - they simply lack the incentive to risk any more inflation than is a part of the necessary process to kickstart the economy.

"Lose our freedoms" - Huh? Are you on drugs? The only bills that I've seen passed which curtail our freedoms in the last decade have been those that come from the Right. And please don't equate me with Fascists or Communists, doing so will only demonstrate illiteracy on your part.

"become even more controlled by the UN and elites" Uhm, lay off the Alex Jones and Glenn Beck. They're in it to sell products off of sensationalism. If you have specifics to discuss, another thread is the place. This one is about the fiscal cliff.

If you want me to cite sources or display my reasoning for anything in my previous post, just ask.

I am on a similar page as azazeleblis here, but did not want to repost the long quote, see his posts above!

I must retract my statement that "only Republicans" have been working to curtail our freedoms. The author of the Senate bill on Email Privacy, a Democrat, has ammended the bill in such a way where it would allow federal agents to read our emails without so much as a warrant.

No, the problem of curtailing freedom and privacy is not localized to one single party.
