Open borders? No. What would be a great start to fixing the problem would be to amend the law that says that anyone born on US soil is a US citizen. But closed borders? That's lame as well, not to mention probably shooting ourselves in the foot. There are ways to become a citizen legally. Yes, it takes a lot of time, but that's because there are already plenty of people that we have enough trouble housing, finding jobs for, educating, and keeping in good health.

This could also have something to do with the fact that the government takes care of everyone. But that's for a different post.

The problem with amending that law though is that if you deny people born there and growing up there citizenship, you have ALL sorts of problems with alienation and lack of integration, which cause crime, socioeconomic problems and all that jazz. Germany didn't allow people born here citizenship for a long time, and as a result there's a whole generation of (mostly) Turks who feel that they don't belong anywhere. They were born here, grew up here, and have never even been to Turkey, but they aren't really part of the "system" here and don't get the same benefits as everyone else born in Germany. And this causes a LOT of problems.
In the end I don't care what the US decides to do. But if they amend this law, they'll find themselves not solving illegal immigration, and having more crime and poverty on their hands to deal with.
