Are all threads closed here after some time?

Are all threads closed here after some time?

And how long is that time?

It is disappointing to come back here after some time and find the threads closed that one would like to write in.

Just because some threads are a few months old - is that reason enough to close them?

What harm is done to leave them open?

Non-sticky threads tend to lock after about six months of inactivity if memory serves. Is there a specific thread that you wanted to re-open?

Other things, like humanity, and mercy, and charity, that most good men hold more precious than all else, they do not come first for the Light. Oh, sometimes they are there; often, indeed. But in the very long run the concern of you people is with the absolute good, ahead of all else..."

      Pretty much this.

On about 95% of forums I've posted on, visited, lurked, read and what not... thread necromancy is generally frowned upon. And the staff here agree with the notion. We have it set up so that threads that have been inactive for 180 days get closed automatically, excluding sticky threads.

We give everyone here the option to either:

      A) Create a new topic
      B) Ask a moderator to re-open a particular thread.

In the event that a thread was closed due to a conflict, re-opening the thread will not be an option and the only thing to do is create a new topic. If this is the case and depending on the nature of what's being discussed, the staff may monitor the topic closely to avoid another conflict like in the previous topic.

I'm glad this was brought up because I was wondering the same thing as Larix. Some of the sub-forums have more closed threads than open. I wondered if there was merit to keeping threads open for the sake of new comers. It would be more welcoming to have more threads open for discussion. However, I think the 6 month period is not that unreasonable. inactivity in some threads probably has more to do with the size of our community rather than lack of interest.

          Why are threads closed here?

Closing threads for no reason is a good way to ruin an otherwise good forum.

and opening a second thread to ask/complain about something that you asked less than a month ago in the same section and can see your own topic clearly on the front page of the site info subforum gets both topics merged and locked.

I will repeat what was already explained once. If there is a specific autolocked thread that you want open then ask one of the staff. It's an easy procedure for us to re-open a thread.

Do not get in the habit of spamming the site info subforum with questions that you personally have already asked and received answers for. You won't like my response.
