    Slavic or Sami folklore?

So recently I've been interested in learning a bit about the folklore/mythology from either Slavic nations or Sami people. However, I'm having a hard time finding anything concrete, as if there aren't any texts that exist describing the stories of either groups of people. Does anyone know of any works that may fall into these categories? Preferably something public domain, or if there's any trustworthy websites that collects the tales, or even non public domain books I could find easily.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm going to just copy and paste my response to a similar thread on another forum. So if you see duplicates in google, it's probably just me... Get ready for the wall of text. >.>

Whew... and now for the books:

    I know, wall of text.

Be sure that if you look into the actual books, you keep lists of the books' sources and reference lists as well, those are the parts you want...

There are also some free kindle/cloudreader books on amazon regarding Russian/Slavic/Balkan folklore and faery tales, I'll try to dig those out another time. I hope you're ready for some reading.

Link to free e-reader/kindle folklore download. If you peruse the site a bit, you can find similar free downloads for Slavic, Russian, Celtic, Irish, Gaelic, Nordic, English, American, Australian, yadda-yadda-yadda-yadda-yadda.

    Enjoy!

I have more resources but they're not in English...

Thanks for all the links! These will be pretty helpful, I'm surprised to find so many. However... with all the dots in the links, they... don't work.

Some of the older sites have moved or shut down or.. something. *shrugs* I'm missing a few, sorry if a few are in Serbian or Slovenian or Russian, I think I filtered it all out but I'm dead tired.

I also ordered about 5 new folklore books on the topic that are coming in the mail in the next week or so that I've forgotten the name of. If they're any good, I'll add.

As a footnote, my beliefs are centered around Slovenian lore and not the rest (Polish, Serbian, Macedonian, etc...) so none of my sources will reflect those. Russia is a genuine interest, but not necessarily a purely spiritual one (Slavic cultures share similarities, but not always specifics).

But there are a LOT more Polish resources floating around on the net that I haven't even touched on. Take to your google, do some digging.

If this is a doublepost, sorry. I keep clicking the wrong button. I've been enjoying the Sami' and similar cultures, music lately on youtube and idly pondering looking into it myself, this will save some time, thanks.

Wow, this is a lot of stuff. I already downloaded the free ebooks for my PC kindle so i'll be looking through those soon. All the other sites seem to just have so much information, I'm kind of surprised since when i searched I came up with near nothing. So thanks again.

Some of the links were broken; I had to go through my reference bookmarks and weed out/rewire some of the links. But the good ones stayed intact. ^^

I've found the most readily available roots in English tend to be either Polish or Russian lore in actuality, and they're fairly similar (different names, same identity). On that note, there are a LOT of books on the subject on amazon for reasonable prices alongside what's up on websites.

                    Re: Slavic or Sami folklore?

I don't have everything linked, but I've gone through many decent sources in the past five or six years. There are a lot of English resources out there on Russian folklore, including Russian Folk Belief by Linda J. Ivanits, and Bathhouse at Midnight, which describes magical traditions. Then there are fairy tales, such as those recorded by Afanasyev. You'll find similar fairy tales from other countries, as shown by the link below.

Resources from Slavic countries other than Russia are rarer in English, but very much worth it. They show you which elements are shared between Slavic countries. Those that are widely shared across Eastern Europe are most likely to be ancient. I recommend studying the Carpathian Hutsuls, who are the subject of the link below. There's also the book called "On the High Uplands." Which speaks a lot about their traditions.

I also recommend Mercia McDermott's book on Bulgarian folk tradition, and a number of publications in Studia Mythologica Slavica, such as the pdf on Slovenian folklore below. I feel that it really helped with my understanding of Perun's mythology. I've noticed that there's quite a bit on Southern Slavic tradition out there, if you really look. Just try searching terms like "Zapis", "Hala", and "Badnjak".

Frazer's Golden Bough has some interesting bits about Slavic folk tradition, although they're mixed in with info on other cultures as well. The "Mythology of All Races" books also have books on Slavic, as well as Finno-Ugrian mythologies, which draw heavily upon recent folklore. Some of the Indo-European comparative mythology books are informative as well, although like all publications on Slavic paganism, they can be hit and miss.
