    Morganian reapers?

(Sorry I haven't posted anything in a while, college has been keeping me busy) So recently, a friend of mine was telling me about the Morrigan having children and/or reapers that do her work. I've never heard of this from anyone who hasn't heard it from him, and Google turned up no results, which seems to make him the only one who knows anything about this. Do any of you wonderful people here on PF have experience with or knowledge of reapers? UPG is fine, but if anyone knows of a source I could go to and find out for myself, I will hug you through my computer several times over.

It sounds like something from a video game called Dragon's Age, but I'm not sure. It's been awhile since I've read any Celtic myths or legends, but I've never heard of the Morrigan having daughters or children at all.

The "children" might have been a metaphorical thing.

As in people who worship the Morrigan & go out and kill other people? Or are somehow carrying out Her 'orders'?

Yeah... I tend to prefer a decent distance between myself and people who have those sorts of ideas about their various deities. That's about one crazy step away from someone who says, "the Morrigan/Kali/Hades/Satan/God/my dog' says you have to die".

    Re: Morganian reapers?

The Morrigan is a triple-Goddess. Badb, Macha, and Nemain/Anu/and a few others names, are the three entities that make up The Morrigan. Macha did have children. These may be the children referred to. But I have never heard of any of them being reapers. Nor have I heard of The Morrigan having reapers of any kind.

The Morrigan is a Goddess of the Underworld, and a psychopomp (escorts the newly dead to the Underworld/afterlife). She has been compared to the Grim Reaper a couple of times.

Also, The Morrigan is an extremely complex Goddess to begin with. Now add to that the lack of a written history on Her; and you have a Goddess that stories can easily be misunderstood, or even out and out made up.

Besides, The Morrigan is a Goddess of war. If She wants you dead, She's most likely to do it Herself, rather than have "reapers" do it for Her.

    My 2¢.

My thoughts exactly. Which is why I brought the discussion here, to people who have possibly known of her existence for more than ten months.

Does your friend say where he heard this from? Or what lead him to believe this?

There is another possibility. If you read "The Guises of the Morrigan - The Irish Goddess of Sex & Battle", by David Rankine, you will see that The Morrigan can be linked to scores of other Goddesses. Granted, this book tends to get what I call "a bit thready" towards the end in that the links to some of the Goddesses gets pretty thin and sketchy. But after reading this book, and following up on some of the lesser known connections, it might be possible to find a Goddess that did have children, or reapers, doing Her work, and confusing Her with The Morrigan. Just another thought.

I would be interested in knowing of anything that he read, or heard that would get him to believe this way.

    Thanks in advance.

Also, I've never heard of any reference to children in a metaphorical sense. But keep in mind, I don't know everything about The Morrigan either.

He learned about it from his family tradition. Actually, I just met someone else in college who heard about them from his family, so apparently it is a thing or something.

I was thinking maybe how Christians call themselves a "child of God", or something like that.

I have not heard of any family traditions like this; until now. Just goes to show that you can learn something new everyday.

That could make sense. Usually, or at least the people that I've met, that follow The Morrigan refer to themselves as warriors or fighters. But with The Morrigan being a Goddess of sovereignty and the land, I could see "children" being used.

The Morrigan having children to do her bidding? Not sure if she'd really be the type to do that, at least I haven't heard anything like it. As far as I would think, she'd be more inclined to do the deeds herself. Ive heard about her having one child, but nothing more.
