    Babies and food

When did you start giving your kids their first tastes of food? How did they react? Etc.

Nova's two months and I've given her a few tastes of this and that. She seems to really enjoy the experience. I make sure everything I give her is super tiny so she can't choke on it and usually just enough she can get the flavor from it. I've let her taste a grape, some cheese, a piece of turkey, a bit of bread. That sorta thing. It fascinates her and me, which is awesome... I should get some pics put up of the faces she makes actually.

I wondered if he could ever understand that it was a blessing, not a sin, to be graced with more than one love.
It could be complicated; of course it could be complicated. And it opened one up to the possibility of more pain and loss.
Still, it was a blessing I would never relinquish. Love, genuine love, was always a cause for joy.

I think Lily was 3-4 months old before I even tried, and probably 5 or more months old before she actually ate anything. Tasting is fine, as long as she's still getting all her milk/formula. Because some people think feeding cereal to a little kid makes them fuller, but its less nutritious, so its a bad idea.

    Re: Babies and food

They really shouldn't have anything at all until they are 4-6 months. Its not so much about choking as it is the immaturity of their GI tract and the potential for allergies. Babies have a "leaky" GI tract--more stuff gets through it than in adults.

At the 4-6 month mark, if they are showing "readiness" (based on certain activities--any decent baby site can give you a list of these), baby cereals are okay, and some veggies. My pedi's official advice was rice cereal first, for about a week, then baby oatmeal for about a week, then veggies and fruits. Whatever you give them at first should be almost like liquid, mixed with breastmilk or formula, and no more than a teaspoon (feed solids after they breastfeed or bottle feed as "dessert"). Gradually over time, as they show tolerance, you can thicken it up and they can have more. But, whatever you do, give them a few days between introducing new foods, so you can gauge any bad reactions or intolerance.

Also, no milk, honey, eggs, cheese, yogurt, peanuts or peanut butter, other nuts, etc...

    Re: Babies and food

I was a really relaxed mom when it came to this. I nursed both my kids up through around 13-18 months, but at around 4-6 months they both started getting teeth in and got chompy, not to mention curious about what we were up to at the dinner table. So I just mashed up a bit of the simplest thing we happened to be eating...usually a veggie or fruit. They didn't really need a "meal", it was a sensory thing.

I still remember my daughter's first thanksgiving; she was determined to dive right at the bright red homemade cranberry sauce on everyone's plate. If you gave her a taste, though, it was terrible! Until she wanted another taste.

I'm definitely not really feeding her. Anything I give her isn't bigger than a crumb. I don't want her tummy getting upset. It's more that I want her to be familiar with all the wonderful tastes out there.

    You've already done that.

And, if you are breast feeding, you still are.

But, if you are going to do it...make sure its the right kinds of foods.

My parents took very much the same view with alcohol. Not as a baby of course, but definitely by the time I was five. And as I grew up?
I have no tolerance for it and rarely touch the stuff.
Which has little to do with this thread really, but I just thought I'd add my two pennorth.

So I can blame my obsession with pizza on mom?
    because that could be amusing...

    Yoda

Yoda told stories, and ate, and cried, and laughed: and the Padawans saw that life itself was a lightsaber in his hands; even in the face of treachery and death and hopes gone cold, he burned like a candle in the darkness. Like a star shining in the black eternity of space.

"But those men who know anything at all about the Light also know that there is a fierceness to its power, like the bare sword of the law, or the white burning of the sun." Suddenly his voice sounded to Will very strong, and very Welsh. "At the very heart, that is. Other things, like humanity, and mercy, and charity, that most good men hold more precious than all else, they do not come first for the Light. Oh, sometimes they are there; often, indeed. Re: Babies and food

Five and half months and she's eating like a champ now. Rice cereal (I really don't like that stuff, it just does seems to have much substance, more filler, but I guess it does have some nutrients and I get the DHA + probiotic version.) Veggies. I've given her some of those organic squeeze pouches and she's all but addicted to mum mums... I want a better option for those though. Seriously. And all the homemade recipes online have reviews saying that they're crumbly rather than.. melty? Idk. She's had green beans, beats, corn, kale, spinach, barley and plenty of real food (that was just the baby stuff). She actually started begging for food about a month ago... She would look at us when we were eating, reach for it, and start whining. So, I'd say the food thing is going well.
