Nightmares? Night terrors? What is this?

    Greetings fellow mortals!

As you guys know, I am awesome. But even awesome people like me go through strange experiences!

Last night, I had a really hard time sleeping. I was having constant nightmares. However, these nightmares were more like night terrors. I experienced them about 3 to 5 minutes after falling asleep. My girlfriend described it to me. My leg and arms muscles start twitching. One at a time first. Then they start twitching more frequently and more, and my breaths become short and heavy. And then I wake up full of fear and heavily breathing until I calm down. About 6 or 7 times. If my girlfriend woke me up before waking up myself, I would not experience fear after waking up. It would kind of interrupt the dream-thing.

As for the content of the nightmares, I cannot remember a thing. In fact, I only remember waking up due to this about 3 or 4 times, not the 7 or 6 my girlfriend mentions. I also had some muscle pain after waking up. I guess that comes from the movements and frequent twitching. I had cramp-like pains at some point. I felt physically and mentally exhausted after waking up. And this morning I wasn't really well-rested.

What could this be? It can hardly be nightmares, as I didn't sleep long enough to enter R.E.M. phase, and they weren't night terrors because I was asleep, I didn't feel fear during the event only after, and finally I can't remember a thing.

I hope it doesn't happen again tonight. I don't want to keep myself and my girlfriend from sleeping at night.

    Best regards!

    Sean.

EDIT: Ooops, I posted this into the wrong category. It was intended for General Discussion. My bad!!

Hmm, looks like general discussion to me.

Like I said, you appear to be in general discussion....

As general clarification to everyone and assurance that no one is hallucinating more than normal, the thread looks like it's in general because I put it here immediately before commenting.

I am not sure, but I think I know what you mean here. It depends on what was going in the dream - there is little difference between nightmare and night terror. For everyone it's possible different, but I can recommend next:
          1. Resisting to what's happening in the nightmare / night terror
          2. Forcing yourself to wake up - it's the best solution

Muscle twitching often happens if you drink a lot of water before going to sleep, especially if it's cold outside.
          I hope it helped.

Re: Nightmares? Night terrors? What is this?

There can be psychic and physical reasons for sleep disturbances, so I'm going to try and describe the commenest ones here.

            1. Physical.
Never underestimate what the body can do to itself. The twitching may well be periodic limb movement disorder - if it IS that then ask you girlfriend to time it. It will happen, regular as clockwork over a certain number of seconds (I kid you not.) Anything from about 11 - 28 secs is normal, though people can be outside this parameter. It's not serious though it annoys the hell out of whoever is sleeping with you.

Another cause can be silent reflux. With this you wake up gasping for breath because your lungs have shut down (due to the silent reflux from the gut). Now this CAN be more serious, and if you suspect if could be that (to be fair it doesn't sound like it from what you've written) then get thee to an Ear Nose and Throat specialist. Meanwhile, antacids and avoiding food after about 5pm are the way to get rid of it or at least keep it at bay.

Other causes - similar symptoms though - include sleep apnoea.

            2. Psychic causes.
Night terrors are where you wake screaming. Next day you usually remember nothing about it.

Night mares are just bad dreams.

The Night Mare is a specific form of psychic attack that begins with feeling unable to move, then a crushing or suffocating sensation as though someone is sitting on your chest (this is why, if you are prone to attacks by the Night Mare you really must try and ensure you don't sleep on your back). You then become aware of something or someone sitting on your chest and sometimes you will also hear spoken words: 'Be pressed down,' used to be a popular one.

To be honest I can't say exactly what you experienced. It sounds more like a night mare (often people don't remember what they are about) - perhaps based in some deep seated phobia. If you want to pm me further (or indeed discuss it in this thread) then please let me know!

Hope it clears for you soon.

Re: Nightmares? Night terrors? What is this?

He was sleeping on his side, in my arms. I let him sleep on his back only once this night, because we wanted to know if there was going to be any difference. Unfortunately, it didn't change anything.

The twitching was not really regular. It was the same every time: at first, one muscle at a time, almost regular; then more frequently, irregularly, like he was fighting or running in a particularly intense nightmare. I'm absolutely sure he was breathing. I stayed awake until the 2 last ones (around 5 am).

We tried letting him awaken himself but decided not to after seeing the effects. I generally woke him up before the end.

This night was quite strange since he was experiencing these nightmare-like moments only little time after being asleep, and didn't remember anything after waking up. I tried to ask him everytime but always got the same answer.

Re: Nightmares? Night terrors? What is this?

Then it's very puzzling. I still think it's a phobia induced nightmare - although they can be quite horrifying the dreamer often wakes with no memory of them afterwards. If it happens again I think the best thing is to soothe him, tell him you're there and you won't let anything hurt him, and ask him outright at the time what's happening. Sometimes - but not always - you get answers.

Otherwise my only advice is to make sure he isn't over-tired when going to bed because that too can cause sleep disturbances. I still don't think it's a psychic attack, but if you feel happier taking some protective measures that might make you both feel easier.

Keep in touch and good luck in getting to the bottom of it!

I just hope it's not going to happen again soon. It would be quite a problem with our 2 weeks of exams.

Thank you for your help! I appreciate it a lot.

Hi Luna - you're very welcome, I just wish I could have been more helpful. I know that stress can be a factor in psychic sleep attacks such as The Night Mare (though emphatically I would say that I am sure this isn't that sort of attack in Sean's case.) Try not to worry too much with the exams therefore, as this could increase the likelihood of another bout of sleep disturbance.
And best of luck - both with sleeping and with your exams!

Re: Nightmares? Night terrors? What is this?

I personally really like to absolutely sort out any physical issue or reaction before throwing ourselves into the foggy world of supposed psychic attacks. If it really where one, there would many other questions, such as who might have wanted to deprive me of sleep that night?

The episode didn't repeat itself the night after or the one after that, so I think it's over for good, for the moment.

Maybe I just ate too much before sleeping (which is the case), and it caused this reaction.

Thank you, Tylluan, you were helpful, in my opinion

I believe the nightmares are induced from a resistance to trust. I think it's a conditioned response of your mind to be against trusting others but because you consciously trust your gf now, ur mind is fighting this. That's what I sense. I used to be really good at sensing people since I was born being able to, but I developed an iron deficiency when I was younger and it went undiagnosed for years. It really affected my abilities and recently they've been growing stronger and I'm getting more right than wrong readings now, but if this doesn't seem accurate to you, please let me know so I can separate my false readings from accurate ones and know which energy of my own is safe to rely on.

I've been with her for almost 4 months now, I doubt trust issues would be kicking in right now after that time. It could be, I don't know. If it's unconcious, I couldn't know. Not without engaging in deep meditation and hyper-awareness. I don't think it is that though...

                              Thank you for the response
