I understand the basic idea, but I don't quite get how it works. Do you use the ball/mirror/crystal/whatever just to focus? Is it a spell? What do you use scrying for?

Re: What Is Scrying?
I don't scry personally, but my understanding of the theory is that the foci used (black mirror, crystal ball, etc) serves to both help you reach a deeper state of consciousness (akin to using a statue or a candle to meditate - you clear your mind by focusing on a single object only) to facilitate contact with discarnate entities, and then once you've reached that state and made contact, it provides a convenient medium through which the entity can convey it's appearance and communication.

Re: What Is Scrying?
Scrying is a method of fortune telling. Basically, you look at something (usually shiny) until you see a vision of some sort. The trick is to concentrate on it so hard that your gaze unfocused and you sort of try to hang there at that spot of unfocused concentration for as long as it takes to "see" (hear, feel, etc) whatever you are trying to get information about. Often a scrying mirror (generally a black mirror--really a piece of black reflective glass...a dark computer screen makes a decent scrying mirror) is used, but a bowl of water, a crystal ball, a fire (or candle) all work too. Depending on one's beliefs, they may ask for the aid of various spirits or deities beforehand and thank them afterwards, turning the event into a ritual. But really all you need is the ability to concentrate while having an unfocused gaze, and a focal point.
...and patience.
