I myself had a 6 foot gopher snake I caught in a field near where I lived...also had a lot of alligator lizards growing up.

I have seen,back in California a timber rattler ,they can be large.. as shown below.

If I saw that in my garden I'd burn my house down

Oh anu the lizard is gorgeous. I love lizards... snakes are wonderful, but I would probably run like mad if I found a rattler in the wild .

Just lost about 2 ours searching snakes on youtube....very easy to get sucked into the videos...Black Mambas,bush masters,all the deadly ones....runs away laughing and screaming.....Snakes on a plane.....call Samuel L. Jackson right NOW!!!

I've never been able to deal with snakes very well...
I lived in Florida for several years and I really miss the beautiful weather and the beaches, but not the snakes. They just seemed to pop up all over the place down there!

I can't imagine ever seeing a snake in the wild :P in England the most exotic animals we ever get are foxes and squirrels :') although my uncle who lives in the deep, dark, wet and windy wastes of Wales gets adders in the scrubland outside his cottage :P

I love snakes...we used to go camping in the spring and fall down in the bluffs in Southern IL and do snake counts during their migration.

Brings back fond memories of playing on the edges between ditches and fields, and having handful of garter snakes in my hands.
