Teachers Allowed To Use Deadly Force?

A Texas Bill, if passed, will allow teachers to use deadly force against students.

On one hand, I think about the friends and family I have that are teachers, and how hard it must be to not be able to defend yourself against a student that might be attacking you.

On the other hand, I am worried how allowing a teacher to use deadly force will make situations escalate more quickly.

    What do you think?

Err, my issue is why does this need special legislation?

is pretty standard to my knowledge. Is there something weird about Texas law where Defense of Others needs to be expanded? Lethal Force is already covered inside Defense of Others so...

I would say "because Texas", but that's not exactly fair...even if Texas does get a little wacky with that kind of stuff.

I dont't think anyone should be given special dispensation to use deadly force as a routine part of their employment without extensive training and oversite. And heck, schools can't pay for that.

Yah, this is the one I mentioned on the first "what's wrong with Texas" thread. The thing that disturbed me the most is that the legislation allows for the use of deadly force if the student is damaging, or believed will damage, school property. Taking out some property, peeps, not even a living being, is grounds for execution. Of course, when we lived in Texas the "he needed killing" defense was still viable.

I'm perfectly okay granting teachers dispensation to use lethal force in a scenario where a reasonable being would believe that it is the only reliable method of preventing someone from killing the teacher in question, another member of the faculty or a student. My only problem is that it shouldn't require any additional legislation.

I have that dispensation without being a teacher.

              My problem is expanding it.

If you live in a community where you feel the absolute need to carry your gun around at all times..like to the super market, to your church, to your school, to your dentist's office...your community might just be completely full of assholes.

We have a gun show coming up here at the Civic Center, on Valentine's Day. Isn't it romantic? Skip the roses & chocolate, I'll take that Desert Eagle, honey!

Seriously, in this area, pretty much everyone is armed. It's simply not a big deal. Kids hunt by age 6. They do not shoot each other - you don't hear of that here. We have crime issues like drugs, overdue library books, some random robberies, but it's considered very normal to carry a gun. I went to the gun show one year, and was a little shocked to see both guns and ammo out in the open for sale - my NY/NJ upbringing was telling me some nut could easily buy stuff, go in the parking lot, load up, and come back in blazing....but here, it's kinda the safest place to be. Our teachers are armed in the classrooms. Somehow, I firmly believe this is the last place in America where a school shooting would happen.

Oh, don't be modest, Hawkfeathers, Texas is well represented on the list of school shooting at Wikipedia.

I'm in the Ozarks, (south central MO, north central AR), not Texas! I'm 200 miles from an airport and 100 miles from a mall.
