Target and their walk of shame

A distraught mother is suing Target for her son’s suicide. The employee was allegedly paraded around the store in what is being called a “walk of shame,” according to the lawsuit. Virginia Gentles is going after the big box retailer after her 22-year-old son and former Target employee Graham jumped to his death from the […]

Thoughts??? I didn't know Target did a "walk of shame". I know I wouldn't like being falsely accused of theft and being paraded around in handcuffs. I also know though if I had committed the thefts I still wouldn't want to be paraded around in handcuffs.

Insufficient detail. Why are target managers directing police (as opposed to private security staff) on the handling of a suspect?

Don't really have anything useful to say till I see more detail.

All the information I can find right now says the same exact thing. That Target said they don't have a "walk of shame" and they released a statement saying "Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the friends and family of this individual. At this pending litigation we don't have further comment at this time." They also all say that Gentle's had Aspergers. I'm curious to see what happens because your right MO if they suspected him of theft why wouldn't they use their LP officers to handle this? What was the point of the police?

My issue was more, "Why are police going along with this? They don't get anything except an opportunity to have their methods challenged publically and in a court room."

If that employee ended up being not guilty of shoplifting, he might not be able to work there again, but he could sue the hell out of them for the personal stress and embarrassment. If, indeed, this actually happened, because the info is very patchy. He might have been taken out through the store and perceived it as a walk of shame.

I wish there was more information... Did they have a video of the kid stealing? Or were they just going off word of mouth?

              Either way, that poor kid...

Also, in places I've worked before, usually the police just escort the person to the cash register and require them to pay for the item (as long as it isn't anything too expensive) and issue a warning for the first offense. I've never actually seen anyone one handcuffed in those type of situations.

Though the LP guy at my old store was scary; I'd seen him frog march customers to the back room before. But usually after the police got there, the customer (or employee) was treated better, not worse.
