I just got quite a large Aloe Vera plant as a gift. I was wondering if anyone has any good tips on how to keep the plant healthy. My thumb isn't as green as it should be yet, any experience is helpful

I believe it's in the succulent family. Don't over water it. Those plants just last forever with little care. My nana had one on her porch. Any time we cut ourselves she'd just break off a branch and go to town on our wound.

If you need to repot it, you need to get a quick draning cactus/succulent soil and the pot always needs (at least one) bottom drain hole (a 3-4 hole pot is better).
Do not over-water. Watering more than once a week is over watering, watering once a week is still probably over watering (depending on humidity and how quick the soil dries out). The soil should be COMPLETELY BONE DRY for several days before you water it. When you water it, soak it completely and make sure it is draining and not standing in the water.
Do not put your aloe out where its in direct sun all day (or even half day). It will get burnt. Seriously. They like light, but too much direct sunlight can damage the leaves.
You can actually harvest the stems, slice them in half, and freeze them to put on your burn--ice and aloe all at once. Another trick is to peel it and put the pieces in an ice cube tray and freeze it.

And for quick usage, I can cut off a small end from
one of the leaf/vine/tentical things and squeeze the juice out? No real proper way of cutting/harvesting is there?

Yup...I usually cut the piece off the leaf and then cut the leaf section lengthwise and just stick it on the boo boo.Originally Posted by Norse_Angel
(and yes, its a leaf! Aloe also has a stem which is actually the bit underground that the roots are coming off, and it may form a flower stalk...I've only seen this happen once to one of my mom's aloes. Generally they reproduce by division and you can separate them while repotting and give the babies away. )

If you over water it, the roots will rot. You won't really know they've rotted for some time. Then the leaves will slowly start to rot too. They'll just kind of get floppy and droopy and turn to mush inside the harder outer portion of the leaf. If one or two start to do this, from my experience, the roots are probably already gone and the plant is a goner anyway. So really, truly, do not overwater your aloe. It's no good.

I have a large aloe plant that is constantly outgrowing it's pot. It looks like you have plenty of care advice, but one tip I found for sunburn treatment is to harvest your plant ahead of time and cut them in a half length wise then into 2 inch pieces. Put these in the freezer and apply to burns frozen. Ahhhhhhh. So relieving.
